“Obe & Ashima” Wins 5Point Film Festival’s “Best of Festival”
Monday, May 7th, 2012From The Denver Post:
Boulder’s Sender Films took top honors at the 5Point Film Festival in Carbondale over the weekend, winning the five-year-old festival’s coveted “Best of Festival” award with the compelling short film “Obe & Ashima.”
Weaving a strong story into perfectly edited shots, the film fired up the crowd at last Thursday’s sold-out showing of “Obe & Ashima” in Carbondale.
As 9-year-old Ashima Shiraishi scrambled through moves that thwarted professionals twice her size – coached by the passionate, second-time-around climber Obe Carrion – the film left viewers rooting hard for both athletes as they uncovered different yet equally gratifying rewards in climbing.
Too often today’s athlete-driven films lack potent narrative. “Obe & Ashima” breaks out of that rut.
