Maya Madere

Favorite Shoe: Shaman Low Volume

Maya discovered climbing at a local gym in her hometown of Austin, Texas, and started competing when she was 13. She's been a fixture of the USA Climbing youth and open circuits for the past 10 years, and she's traveled far and wide to compete at world cups and championship events in both lead and bouldering, with pit stops at world-class crags like Céüse, France and Magic Wood, Switzerland in between comps. A natural adrenaline junkie, Maya loves the fast-paced problem solving challenges posed by competition bouldering, and she's inspired by lead climbing's test of precise execution, fortitude, and grit.

Although Maya's current goals are competition-oriented, she also loves to climb real rocks, and she's sent 5.14a and V11 on several occasions. Outdoor trips remind Maya why she loves climbing and help her unwind from the stress and intensity of competition. When she's not climbing, she also enjoys windsurfing, mountain biking, skiing, and most other forms of adventuring, including but not limited to jumping into lakes, building very large campfires, and getting abjectly lost in the mountains.

As a student of computer science at Stanford University, Maya also competes for the Stanford Climbing Team on the collegiate circuit. Like most college students, she suffers from a persistent caffeine addiction and a perpetual lack of sleep, but she still finds time for her creative outlets of choice: drawing, journaling, dancing (poorly), and (occasionally) playing the violin. Maya is a people person at heart; she's happiest when surrounded by friends, and she feels deeply grateful for the incredibly supportive network of like-minded individuals she has found through climbing.

Despite her competitive and goal-oriented tendencies, Maya thinks the most important part of climbing is having fun -- even if it's Type II fun. She enjoys the exhilaration of pushing the limits of her comfort zone, trying hard, and taking on challenges that scare her, but she also enjoys the tranquility of being in her element on the wall and chilling out with her friends in beautiful places. She believes that climbing should be a healthy balance of both.
